Dead puppies and kittens in crates reveal the dark side of China's mystery box craze

The mystery box trend - but with living breathing animals?

On May 2021, 156 boxes of puppies and kitties, some dead were discovered in a city of Chengdu, China. Following the trend of ordering mystery boxes that used to contain innocent items like cosmetics, or figurines - this bustling business in China has gone a step too far. Innocent puppies and kittens, placed in suffocating boxes, are now being included in these mystery boxes, for as low of a price as $5. While this is illegal, it has been difficult to crack down on. Most animals do not survive the trip, and are subject to tormenting circumstances. Furthermore, this has also encouraged unethical breeding of animals under cruel circumstances, whereby they are treated as objects that are produced in masses.
