Can captive animals truly ever return to the wild?

In many ways, humans have vastly improved how we treat captive wildlife. However, the true aim should always be to return wildlife to the wild and allow them to roam freely in their natural habitat.

Of course, there are certain obstacles that need to be overcome to achieve this idealistic goal. Captive animals seldom learn crucial survival skills and often are too habituated to human contact. Lacking a natural fear of humans, they are vulnerable to poachers and ill equipped for life in the wild.

Thus, the questions we must ask are: can any animal, after years in captivity, ever be truly freed? What can we do to ensure more successful reintroductions to the wild?
